With his colleagues, he’s building ccMonitor, a live-data wiki platform to track the global development of open licensing. At the moment they are analyzing only works released under Creative Commons licenses, free/open source software is excluded for now. At Participatory Media Lab, another project for the analysis of free culture, they are studying the effects of some rights reserved licenses on musical works, through the ccMixter online community. They have published a working paper and several data plot visualizations.

It is now easy to restrict your Image Search results to find images in the public domain or published under Creative Commons or Gnu Free Documentation licenses, so that you can find content from across the web that you can share, use, and even modify.

To filter by CC search, go to Google’s advanced Image Search page and select the options you’d like in the “Usage rights” section. Your results will be restricted to images marked with CC licenses or other compatibly licensed photos. Differently from Yahoo!, Google searches the whole web, not only Flickr.

Remember, Google can only provide search results that its algorithms find tagged with the license you specify; it is your obligation to verify the license of the image you’re using and make sure you’re conforming to its guidelines.

This is a huge step forward for the future of image search on the web, so congratulations to the Google team on another great CC implementation!

Labels and services like Beatpick.com, Jamendo Pro, Liberius and Filozero offer free music, some right reserved licenses and consultancies for this scope. ]]> http://isotype.org/free_ambient_music/feed/ 0 Wikipedia community vote on migration to CC BY-SA begins now http://isotype.org/wikipedia_cc/ http://isotype.org/wikipedia_cc/#comments Thu, 30 Apr 2009 10:56:26 +0000 Lorenzo De Tomasi http://isotype.org/?p=1195 A community vote is now underway, hopefully one of the final steps in the process the migration of Wikipedia (actually Wikipedias, as each language is its own site, and also other Wikimedia Foundation sites) to using Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike as its primary content license.

This migration would be a huge boost for the free culture movement, and for Wikipedia and Creative Commons — until the migration happens there is an unnecessary licensing barrier between the most important free culture project (Wikipedia of course, currently under the Free Documentation License, intended for software documentation) and most other free culture projects and individual creators, which use the aforementioned CC BY-SA license.

To qualify to vote, one must have made 25 edits to a Wikimedia site prior to March 15. Make sure you’re logged in to the project on which you qualify, and you should see a site notice at the top of each page that looks like the image below (red outline added around notice).

The third CC Technology Summit will take place June 26, 2009 in Turin, Italy at Politecnico di Torino. This is just prior to the Communia Conference 2009 on the global science and economics of knowledge-sharing institutions.

Creative Commons is seeking proposals for presentations or panels to be presented at the Technology Summit. Topics of interest include:

  • RDFa and ccREL implementations/deployments;
  • Creative Commons related applications (unique or interesting integration of licensing, as well as reports on consuming or repurposing CC metadata;
  • Provenance of information in Semantic Web applications;
  • Digital copyright registries (“copyright 2.0″), especially in relation to the above technologies.

Presentation slots are 30 minutes long; if additional time is required, email Nathan Yergler to discuss options. Send proposals in the form of abstracts to techsummit@creativecommons.org by Friday, April 24, 2009.

Highlighting that the costs to the public are likely to exceed €1 billion the academics warn:
If Europe wishes to keep its ability to innovate, it must not lock in the current industry structure at a moment of great technological change, it must not inhibit digital creators and archives in the exploration of music – music which has been paid for once already, during the existing term!
The public will not be fooled. If copyright law, cynically, departs from its purpose, piracy becomes an easy option.
We urge the European Parliament, and the governments of member states of the European Union, to consider carefully the independent evidence on copyright term extension, and reject the Directive in its proposed form.

Your MEPs need to know that their voters are concerned and paying attention – use the guide to lobbying your MEPs and the briefing pack made by Sound Copyright.

We can’t overstate it: get in touch with your MEPs now and use the new banners and buttons to spread the word.
