Microsoft has submitted Embedded OpenType (Eot) to W3C and a slimy campaign for Eot has been launched. Eot is a digital restriction management (drm) layer on top of normal TrueType/Opentype files; Eot ties a font file to a certain web page or site and prevents reuse by other pages/sites.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has supported Eot for years, but it has largely been ignored due to the clumsiness of having to regenerate font files when a page changes . Now that other browsers are moving to support normal TrueType and OpenType on the web (Safari, Opera, Mozilla, Prince), W3C is faced with a question: should they bless Microsoft’s Eot for use on the web? Or, should they encourage normal font files on the web and help break Microsoft’s forgotten monopoly?”

Nonostante il gruppo abbia rifiutato le offerte delle case discografiche e si sia disiscritto dalla Siae, continua a vendere dischi e a suonare in Italia e all’estero, con forza e convinzione.

I Rein affrontano la loro battaglia con il solo sostegno delle persone e il loro progetto necessita del massimo appoggio da parte di tutti gli attivisti del movimento per la cultura libera: lavoriamo insieme perché questa band e il nostro movimento diventino un caso discografico e politico.

“Occidente” è un disco che sposa a pieno le politiche sviluppate all’interno della Free Hardware Foundation:

  • rinuncia alla Siae
  • pubblicazione sotto licenza Creative Commons Attribuzione - Non commerciale - Non opere derivate + Autorizzazione Diffusion, sviluppata dallo sportello Liberius.
  • patrocinio della Free Hardware Foundation e pubblicazione in collaborazione con Jamendo, il portale europeo per la condivisione della musica
  • costo equo del prodotto: solo €10 per un doppio cd audio originale di 20 brani
  • autoproduzione, eliminazione degli intermediari superflui e indipendenza
  • elevata qualità
  • solidarismo e cooperativismo come strumenti di produzione e di rapporto con le altre realtà
  • è un prodotto che sovverte la tendenza culturale e musicale imposta dai media e che punta su contenuti, spunti riflessivi, contributi, denunce, vita reale, rifiutando in tronco la plastificazione culturale decisa dal mainstream

È possibile ascoltare alcuni brani dal myspace della band e acquistare il cd su RedShop a soli €9,00 + €2 di spedizione: arriverà direttamente a casa vostra in pochi giorni. Oppure ascoltatelo e compratelo, mentre vi gustate un buon gelato, nella gelateria ForDiLuna, in via della Lungaretta 96, a Trastevere (Roma).

Siae hasn’t yet published an official version of the news, but we have an explicit authorization to spread an agreed press release.

We’ll try to extend the project to every typology of works (music, audio, video, texts, software etc.) and to every “some rights reserved” license (not only Creative Commons ones).

We have started a public debate through a mailing list and a wiki on the network Frontiere Digitali.

After few hours, we have some interesting partners: Beatpick, Fiordiluna icecreams (the first Italian organic-fair-shop that diffuses copyleft music without paying a collecting society), Wikimedia Italia, Jamendo…
